Marcello Pietrantonio (groom), Kinuko Kaneda (bride)
Venue: Hakuhokan

This couple held their reception in Hakuhokan, an authentic Japanese-style venue that can be hired out for events. Drawing on the architectural features of the venue, they entered via the “nure-en” (open veranda) formed under the outer eaves. The wedding guests were deeply moved by the unique atmosphere thus created.

For the customary toasts, the bride and groom performed the ritual of “kagami-biraki”, in which the lid of a sakébarrel is broken on an auspicious day and the sakéis shared out. On this occasion, at the request of the groom, a miniature barrel was used rather than a large one.

The atmosphere inside the venue reached fever pitch when the groom gave a demonstration of “capoeira”, the martial art said to be Brazil’s second national sport.

The guests were captivated to see such an imposing spectacle, which brought the event to a close amid rapturous applause.

The sense of intimacy at a wedding tends to be enhanced when such characteristic features of the couple’s different cultures are included in the staging of the event. How about trying something like this yourselves? This is just an example to help you plan your wedding.

October 5th, 2007
Darren Smith (groom), Eriko Arai (bride)
Venue: Sakure

This couple chose to hold their ceremony in a traditional Shinto sanctuary. Under the watchful eyes of the guests in an atmosphere of great solemnity, the bride and groom entered by crossing an arched bridge (taikobashi). During the ceremony, they made their vows to share life’s joys and tribulations by performing the “sansan kudo” ritual, an integral part of the Japanese-style wedding vows. The bride and groom are presented with three sets of sakécups, from each of which they drink in turn.

At the reception venue, the couple departed temporarily after the toasts, to return dressed up in western style. The guests were thrilled by the gorgeous and graceful sight of the couple enjoying their first dance together. The event closed with generous applause at the perfect harmony of a well-matched couple.

Although this couple chose a Japanese style for their wedding ceremony, others may prefer a western-style church ceremony followed by a Japanese-style reception. The choice is up to the individual couple. This is just an example to help you choose.
